Type: Hybrid (sativa dominant)
Genetics: Trainwreck x Trinity x Jack the Ripper
The Chernobyl strain was actually bred and born from one man’s mission to find the best Trainwreck cut possible. Subcool, the founder of TGA Subcool Seeds made a journey out west for the best of the best of the famous Trainwreck strain. However, Mr. Cool was unimpressed with the various cuts he was coming across, finding them either too tall, too slow growing, or too bisexual for his liking. Finally after a long, exhaustive search, he located a single female plant that had all the traits of the legendary Trainwreck strain. Wanting to make a good thing better, the TGA crew decided to combine their coveted Trainwreck female with Jack the Ripper, a tasty, sativa-dominant strain. Later, the hard-to-find and somewhat mysterious Trinity strain was bred in, which adds a skunkiness and the complex coloring that shows in the late stages of the plant’s growth.
Looks and Smell
The buds from the Chernobyl strain are definitely a sight to see. They have a beautiful, resinous appearance that kind of looks like Trainwreck on steroids. The overall bud structure and genetic breakdown (60/40 sativa dominant) is more on the sativa side with larger nugs that look somewhat dense, but this is deceiving since the big buds weigh next to nothing. The nugs are brightly colored with bold orange pistils and bright neon green calyxes all coming together with above average sugary trichrome coverage that really draws your attention and amplifies the looks of the buds. The smell can only be described and is dominated by the great cannabis term of 'cat-piss.' There are also noticeable undertones of skunk, citrus, and a very pleasing and funky sweet lime aroma on the finish.
The Chernobyl strain is known for its dual heavy-hitting and calming effects on both the mind and body. Although Chernobyl is a sativa-dominant hybrid, the strain is only slightly leaning to the sativa side. There is still a fair amount of indica in the genetics, which adds a pain relief element not usually found in sativa-dominant strains. As such, this is a go-to strain for many MMJ patients in search of a bold terpene profile, and it has a unique ability to help combat a variety of mental disorders. Chernobyl produces a long-lasting, potent high (2-3 hours) that is a bit creeper as the high comes in waves. The smoke has a smooth, deep flavor that is very reminiscent of the smell. There was a lot of citrus flavor on the inhale, and an earthy, skunky, smooth, danky taste on the exhale. The rather enjoyable taste continues to linger on the palate for some time.
This is yet another great sativa-dominant hybrid that also provides some quality pain relief. The high was a mixture of soaring cerebral effects and a numbing of the body that was rather pleasant. This strain includes all the best qualities of Trainwreck, and the added qualities of Trinity and Jack the Ripper are just icing on the cake—or more resin on the buds... Literally.
Chernobyl is best grown indoors, but does very well outdoors as well. It’s probably not a good choice for beginner or even novice growers. This plant can get big fast, and if left untrained, it can easily get out of control. For maximum yield, it is recommended to top the plant early, and it often needs to be topped several times. You want to keep the plants low, bushy, and compact.
Chernobyl has been found effective in treating muscle aches, anxiety, stress, mood disorders, stomach issues, pain relief, ocular pressure, and even some seizure disorders. Chernobyl is not a strain that you see in mass abundance (at least not here in the Bay Area). The Chernobyl strain has been on my 'to do' list for some time now, and I was more than happy to finally introduce myself to these lovely looking buds. If you are a fan of Trainwreck as I am, than this is a can't-miss choice, and maybe even a new favorite.
